5 Remedies for Spring Fever
I feel very restless. Anyone else? I literally just googled spring fever… and check this out…
According to good ole Wikipedia, “the term spring fever may refer to an increase in energy and vitality, as well as a feeling of restlessness, associated with the end of winter. This concept may have a biological basis.” Ok, yes. Wikipedia….I feel this very much right now! The saying “I feel this in my bones” also seems authentic in this moment.
Well technically as I write this it IS actually the Spring equinox. This marks the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. It signifies the equal length of dark and light; 12 hours of night and 12 hours of daylight. The word equinox stems from the Latin words meaning “equal night”: aequus (equal) and nox (night).
It may be the vernal equinox, but with allll kinds of snow on the ground, and still more on the way, here in Northern Minnesota, my spring fever seems to be rearing its head far too early. Help! Anyone else?
Practices to calm “Spring Fever”:
Sunlight!
The good news? The sun is out longer, which gives us more chances to absorb its powerful and helpful rays! Get outside, or sit in a sunny window. If you can get outside at first light in the morning it can help set up your energy and mood for the whole day!
More water
We think we’re complicated, but we’re not. Increase the sunlight + water = think of yourself as a plant. More water can go a long way! Energy levels, mood, and overall health are greatly improved by focusing on upping the intake in your favorite water bottle.
Move it, move it!
One thing we can do, that plants cannot, and that really helps us? Movement! Walking, hiking, biking, swimming, jogging, yoga, weight lifting… movement is transformational for our physical, mental, and emotional health!
Write it down - name it and tame it
Name it and tame it. Write down in a journal how you are feeling. Sometimes the simple act of letting a few words spill on the page can make a world of difference. Identifying how we are feeling, and maybe why we are feeling this way can do it a lot in terms of helping us recognize what’s going on in front of us. Name the feeling, and sometimes that acknowledgement is all we need to take the intensity down a notch.
Connection
Connect with your people! Who do you like to be around? We inspires you? Who makes you feel comfortable? Who makes you feel seen? Who makes you feel alive? Call them up, write them a thank you card, text them, and/or make a plan for face-to-face time. Being with “our people” helps us feel content.
*Bonus practice: put fun on the schedule!
One of my favorite things to do when I’m feeling restless is to make a plan to enjoy myself! I genuinely look forward to kicking off a long-awaited Minnesota summer every June at our annual Luxurious Lake Life Yoga Retreat. Feeling like you can almost hear the lake waves, feel the sand under your toes, or taste the deliciously prepared meals at Madden’s Resort (that you do not have to cook or clean-up)?! Yeah, me too. Let’s retreat in June!
